People undergoing orthodontic treatment often have to wear retainers for life (like a life sentence), and the comfort of the retainer in the mouth directly affects work, life, and happiness index.

I chose to spend 125 yuan to purchase a Taiwanese Baogong lithium electric grinder, and based on my own understanding I finely polish the retainer. Since the technicians and doctors at the hospital are extremely busy, it can only be done by me, who has completed both electrical and metalworking internships.

The objects in the mouth have many blood vessels and nerves, so they heal quickly, but this also makes them particularly sensitive—especially the mucosa, and even more so the tongue.

First, to reduce a “big tongue” when speaking and encourage the tongue to touch the palate and the edge of the palatal retainer, a slanted surface should be ground.

To reduce irritation of the posterior molars that can cause mucosal bleeding and stimulate the salivary glands leading to excessive drooling, for the retainer portion on the backside of the posterior teeth: if you have a wisdom tooth (tooth 8), the retainer does not need to cover the 8, because during orthodontic treatment no bracket is attached to the 8, so it does not need to be retained. If you do not have an 8 but have crowding, whether the part that tightly contacts the backside of tooth 7 should be ground away needs to be consulted with your dentist.

Another point to note is that the retainer becomes quite brittle when dry (for example, after waking up you should rinse with warm water before removing the retainer), so when grinding your hand should hold near the area being ground, but you also need to be

Added to bookmarks, don’t let it be in vain :mingyao:

Can’t the retainer be just 2 years?

Wear it all day in the first year, half a day in the second year, then intermittently; wear more when it feels tight, wear less when it feels loose, depending on how the teeth turn out.

My teeth aren’t attractive either, but after realizing the hassle, I still gave up.

I’ve already been at it for four years. In the case of taking one day off each month (lol), it really requires frequent refinement to adapt to changes. Thanks, lz.

Got braces in 8th grade, and after finishing in 9th grade only wore them for a month

Ten years later, it feels like my teeth have gone back (sad)

Haha, me too, I wore braces for quite a long time in my first year of high school, and together with the retainer I probably wore it for no more than 3 months :hugs:

Evaluation of transparent pressure film retainers from different hospitals:

  • Fourth Medical University Dental Hospital: S grade, 500 each, no bubbles, the edge and the junction line between gum and tooth are even, perfect, except expensive.
  • Hefei Dental Hospital: B, 180 each, many bubbles, edge is flat
  • Nanjing Dental Hospital: A‑, 300 each, edge also flat, but some areas may not fully cover the tooth, there is a relatively large bubble on the lingual side of tooth 7

If any forum members know of medical institutions in the Yangtze River Delta with high‑quality retainer manufacturing, please let us know.

After seeing this article, I also want to get orthodontic treatment
My teeth look fairly aligned
But they easily get stuck with meat or other food debris

Slight misalignment is the optimal state; I have even seen orthodontists whose own teeth are misaligned.

During orthodontic treatment, something is bonded to the tooth surface, and to ensure strong adhesion, acid etching is performed beforehand.

Also, to avoid detachment, you shouldn’t gnaw on hard foods like ribs, and even apples need to be cut into small pieces.

If metal brackets are used together with metal wires for correction, they become difficult to clean and can easily cause cavities. Moreover, after each meal, food can get stuck, requiring you to brush many times a day, which can damage enamel. And you can’t just eat whatever you want at any time.

Orthodontic patients often have to wear retainers for life

Retainers are made of plastic, they wear down in the mouth, leading to ingestion of many microplastics. After wearing them for 2 years, the teeth may not be stable, and you might have to wear them for a lifetime.

After the four‑eye steel‑tooth stage, I only wore a retainer for a year and then took it off  I feel uncomfortable.
